Dragon Wars

This was huge in South Korea, but didn’t go over that well with American audiences. Can’t say how much was culture clash or really bad storytelling. Hate to bring in marketing lingo but it applies here: Know Thy Audience. “D-War” seemed like a better fit for kids. A teen/tween hero on a quest -- ala “Transformers” -- probably would have gone over better than two starcrossed, twenty somethings mired in melodrama.

The special effects are pretty good, not mind blowing -- even though three years were spent working on them. The big finale between the two cgi creatures is as boring as you’d expect. Hated it in “Van Helsing” and “Transformers”. No stakes. No tension.

Can’t remember the last time a dragon movie was a hit. “Eragon” was hyped to death and did only so-so business. Still, it must have made some money because there’s a sequel in the works.

Love your new blog header. Very cool.

I keep getting drawn in to watching those ridiculously silly movies on the Sci Fi Channel on Saturdays. Why do I keep expecting one of them to be anything better than a straight-to-DVD release experience?

Tonight's TiVo'ed movie? Monster Ark. Just curious to find out what the mythology will be...Noah had an ark full of normal animals, and someone else created an ark for monsters?

I like watching Asian flicks, so I might try this one out. Really liked "The Host." Hope I can overlook any goofiness.

Thanks. The idea for the header just came to me out of the blue.

I forgot to mention that even though it's a South Korean film, the cast is mostly American -- save for an early flashback -- and the story is set in LA. Robert Forrester and Jason Behr are probably the two most recognizable names in the cast. And it's impossible to overlook the goofiness.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but guy in a rubber suit or stop-motion creatures always trump bad cgi effects. Almost any video game console can deliver a better looking demon than the one in "Monster Ark". Story wasn't half bad though.

I didn't watch the whole "Monster Ark," but I did notice they stole quite a bit from "Raiders of the Lost Ark." I suppose that was on purpose?

I also laughed quite a bit at the black military guy. The way he delivered his lines was hilarious!

And if "Dragon Wars" has Jason Behr in it, I'm all over that. I had a little crush on him when he was in "Roswell." :-)

Yeah, Deebo was really hamming it up in "Monster Ark". He has great scene in "The Dark Knight".

Behr hasn't made a lot of good choices since "Roswell". First "Skinwalkers" and now this. I'm afraid to go on the imdb and look up his next project...

Don't forget his minor role in "The Shipping News." But because that movie tanked, I'm sure almost everyone has forgotten.

It's too bad b/c he's adorable. He could've done much better with his career choices after "Roswell." Waaah!

Another one I'd like to see make it in the movies...Jensen Ackles. He plays Dean so well on "Supernatural." I think he's a huge film star in the making, if only someone would give this guy a leading role.

Maybe Behr needs to do less genre stuff...

Thought I read somewhere that Ackles stars in the remake of "My Bloody Valentine"... in 3-D.

Oh, yay! Thanks for that bit of news. I see he will be playing the lead opposite Jamie King. Some decent names in it. I hope it makes money so that he can get other film roles.

I would so watch him instead of Shia LeBeouf in action pics....

Shia was pretty good in "Disturbia" -- I keep meaning to do a post about that film.

It's hard to pull off the transition from TV to film. Ackles has that working against him.

Action flicks seem desperate for new stars, but I don't quite get the Jake Gyllenhaal "Prince of Persia" thing.
